Crikey! Being the saints that we are, we were burning some midnight oil in excess the other night. It wasn't exactly a birthday party, but while counting our split ends and listening to our usual mix of bee gees and ac/dc, a chilling announcement came through our radio (nicknamed birdman) - Steve 'Crocodile Hunter' Irwin had died - not from evil triffids, but from a sting ray attack. How sad. He was just a man at work, hunting and collecting, and that bad seed of a fish that kinda looks like a bat in our cruel sea had his way with him - but at least he died pretty and without a severed head. We are sure that it was a crowded house and a big day out at the church, people drunk on icehouse or fosters swirling about. Lesson learned. Stop being a beast of bourbon and drone, get out of your silver chair, leave your savage garden of vines, enjoy the world's air supply. Hop on a clean jet with a tall dwarf or in a datsun with your three dirty friends and check out the architecture in helsinki. And also enjoy finer things in life like quality new music, both pre-recorded (see below) and live (see belower, including hot new announcement of I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, from Austin, TX and on Secretly Canadian Records): Select New Releases for 09/05/06 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Grizzly Bear - Yellow House CD (Warp) ................................................................... They may not be from Australia, but Grizzly Bear do not skimp. They're remarkable not just for their attention to detail but for their concern for how a song feels: flush with heart and melancholy, their music is seductive and intimate, deep with hazy-eyed choruses, whistles, piano and banjo. They know melody and ambiance are partners por vida. Experimental mood music with love for classics and standards, it the kind of stuff you yearn to crank when you're lying in bed in clean sheets on a Sunday. Hem - Funnel Cloud CD (Nettwerk) ................................................................... Hem aren't from the land down under either, but they still draw inevitable comparisons to the Cowboy Junkies because of Sally Ellyson's laid-back, clear vocal style, and sometimes to 10,000 Maniacs. The sheer gentleness and tenderness of Hem's earlier records were a sure draw, but after two albums the average listener felt as if Hem may have taken their sound as far as it could go. The trio looked deep and hard into their sound and came up with something beautifully different. Funnel Cloud is a much more lush affair and showcases Ellyson's vocals in an entirely new way. Self-produced, the songs here are of a much wider variety and reveal an entirely new dimension. While committed to acoustic music, the electric guitars, pedal steels, found sounds, and tighter arrangements on Funnel Cloud showcase Ellyson as a passionate singer who perfectly interprets her bandmates lyrics and musical ideas. Iron Maiden - A Matter Of Life And Death CD (Sanctuary) ................................................................... Even Aussie's like metal. And 2003's Dance of Death marked the triumphant return of old-school Iron Maiden. That trend continues with their new album, which positions beloved avatar Eddy on top of a tank with a machine gun leading a weary troop of skeletal soldiers to their doom. At over 70 minutes, its closer to the woefully underrated Seventh Son of a Seventh Son than it is to Piece of Mind, but with far less keyboard tickling. Recorded live in the studio, the whole record is a loosely-knit song cycle with war at its core - exhume prog rock complexity and discipline yet manage to bristle with the kind of small-club intensity usually reserved for acts half their age. Jucifer - If Thine Enemy Hunger CD (Relapse) ................................................................... If you've ever seen this band you know they have a wall of speakers big enough to make the other side of the Earth hear their thunder. The infamous Jucifer has returned with its long-awaited new full-length If Thine Enemy Hunger. The duo's first proper album in almost four years serves up an unforgettable collection of the melodic, bombastic rock that is their calling card. The dreamy, seductive vocals of the gorgeous Amber Valentine melt into monolithic walls of guitar and pounding drums to form the most infectious heavy rock you will ever hear. With a sound as big as the hooks it's 15 tracks carry, If Thine Enemy Hunger is a total eargasm and vibrant return to form by one of the US's most unique rock bands. Pinback - Nautical Antiques CD (Ace Fu) ................................................................... A collection of outtakes, B-sides and rarities from the early years of Pinback's career. "Nautical Antiques" is a thorough exploration of the lush harmonies, ethereal guitar work and pop inventiveness that popularized the band. The listener won't even notice its scattered tracklisting either, for Nautical Antiques holds steady just as much as any proper album would. Not only is Nautical Antiques a solid filler between albums and a great slideshow of years past, but it comes off like a brand new Pinback record. Includes an Australian only B-side perhaps??? I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness - http://chosendarkness.com/ + tba After a lifetime of nightfall and foggy moonlight, Austin's I Love You but I've Chosen Darkness creeped out of the shadows this past spring with their long-awaited full-length debut, Fear Is on Our Side. The record is more sadness than joy with lonely lyrics and hauntingly echoed guitar persuaded by chorused basslines. The sound is coaxing and familiar, textured guitar melodies alternately subtle and entrancing; then howling and anguished. From opening tragic tale "The Ghost," the five-piece echoes past ages and foretells the future. Powerful layers rip through the silence, bonding strength and longing with the weight of a sigh. Their single, According to Plan, was described by Res Magazine as an "ethereal anthem with a great bass hook and gently chiming guitars", the song transcends and destroys the generational gap that plagues so many bands these days who were influenced Joy Division and New Wave hookery.
