Heath, one of our intrepid leaders here at Landlocked, was so entranced by the call of the vuvuzela that he left for Africa. We wish him much fun on his trip. But just because Heath is gone, it doesn't mean the rock stops here in Bloomington. We invite you to join us tonight (7/27) for Landlocked's semi-monthly New Music Happy Hour at The Bishop w/ New Jersey's Home Blitz (this review nails it: http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/5471 ) as well as local troublemakers Pillow Screamers and Soviet surf-punk from one of our favorites, Moscow Moscow Moscow. Don't stop the planet rock! .................................................. NEW ARRIVALS for the Week of 7/27/2010 .................................................. Best Coast - Crazy for You (Mexican Summer) .................................................. Mexican Summer are elated to announce their latest artist and full length release from California's Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno, aka Best Coast. Crazy for You is a 12 track, 29 minute collection of genuinely romantic sandy jams. Hazy, dreamy and genre-defining, Crazy for You proves that the impressive amount of press hype for Best Coast is more than warranted, especially coming off of her previous sold out 7" singles. A collection of maudlin and magical songs that approach relationships with a pure heart, a cloudy mind and pair of gas station sunglasses. Sounds like a teenage Neko. Dean & Britta - 13 Most Beautiful (Double Feature) .................................................. Dean & Britta (ex-Luna, Galaxie 500) were commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum to compose and perform songs for 13 Screen Tests - short, silent portrait films made by Warhol in the mid-60s. This live show has been touring the world for 18 months, with 50 performances to date, playing everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to NYC's Lincoln Center, to a 15th-century cathedral in Paris. Heater - God and Hair LP (Permanent) .................................................. A super upbeat, melodic pop record in essence, but these guys come from a very DIY background. It's got some fast repetitive lo-fi punk rock jams with reverb enhanced vocals and some Clean-esque pop elements, but it's also got tracks with a great laid back summertime '90s alt-pop vibe not too dissimilar from the least noisy 90s moments of Sonic Youth and Sebadoh. All of these elements come together and make for a unique sound (thanks to a little help by Cooper Crain [of CAVE]'s analog production techniques) and one hell of a summertime DIY pop jammer. Michael Hurley - Blue Hills LP (Mississippi) .................................................. New recordings by Michael. On this LP we find Hurley stretching out on six longer than usual compositions that are heartbreaking & beautiful as anything he's ever done. Side one features Hurley on a creaky pump organ. Side two starts out with two newer compositions - just Michael on guitar & vocals. The record ends with a stunning version of Tea Song (which Michael originally wrote & recorded way back in 1963). A sustained feeling of loss & need for redemption haunts this record. Jaill - That's How We Burn (Sub Pop) .................................................. Jaill is a psych-pop 4-piece from Milwaukee, with undeniable guts. In early 2009 they released There's No Sky (Oh My My), an irresistibly catchy, moving, dirty, sarcastic, and new 12-song LP. The album caught the attention of Sub Pop, with stand-out tracks recalling the glory of '90s lo-fi pop. Recorded at his Mystery Room studio with Justin Perkins, the new Jaill album, That's How We Burn, finds the band wrapping its head and arms solidly around a laid-back but creatively effortless brand of pop: bright guitars and amped-up energy skipping like a stone over dense lyrics. Tom Jones - Praise & Blame (Lost Highway) .................................................. This is Tom Jones going back to his roots on an album of gospel, blues, traditional and country songs, wearing his heart on his sleeve, emotionally raw and true. Recording with producer Ethan Johns (Kings Of Leon, Ray LaMontagne, Paolo Nutini, Laura Marling) at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in the little village of Box in Wiltshire, coaxed the most exhilarating performances out of the singer. With musicians including steel guitarist BJ Cole, keyboardist Booker T Jones (of Memphis soul legends Booker T and the MGs), Hammond organist Chris Holland and background vocalists Gillian Welch, Alison Pierce, Dave Rawlings and Orin Waters at hand, Tom has quite simply delivered his tour de force. It's him bearing his soul, singing from the heart, telling it like it is. Seu Jorge and Almaz - s/t (Now Again) .................................................. Listening to this remarkable album for the first time you'll surely be struck first by the deep, soul-piercing voice of that great Brazilian singer, Seu Jorge. But this project is about a band: Almaz. They came together to record a song for a film; and recorded an entire album of music that inspired them. Songs famous within the Brazilian diaspora (Tim Maia, Jorge Ben) mesh with classic American (Roy Ayers, Michael Jackson) and European (Kraftwerk, Cane and Abel) songs begging for a bit of psychedelic samba. Their album is both warm and dark; psychedelic and yet grounded, uplifting but at times somber. Menomena - Mines (Barsuk) .................................................. Portland, OR art-rock trio Menomena is among the leaders of the new school of indie rock musically complex, melodically and lyrically riveting, and unlike anything that has come before. The band's newest work comes after a period of significant upheaval that has left them with no shortage of new ideas, and Mines is as good or better than anything they've done to-date. In the wake of brutal disagreements, unrelenting grudges and failed marriages, Menomena is still standing, and has made an album that many are already saying defines the state of intelligent pop music one decade into the millenium. Mirah - Don't / Tears That Fall 7" (Mississippi) .................................................. Mirah (K Records) has gratiously blessed the Mississippi label with a beautiful 45. This piece of wax contains two original Mirah songs, celebrating the classic girl group era of the 60s. Loosely following this format, and with the accompaniment of some individualistic musicians, something unique was born. Backing musicians from EVOLUTIONARY JASS BAND, PINK WIDOWER and GOLDEN BEARS. Recorded at The Pool Recording Studio in Portland, OR with Alex Yusimov. Old-Style Full Color Tip-On Sleeve. Miniature Tigers - Fortress (Modern Art) .................................................. Critical darlings, Miniature Tigers, are back with their newest release "F O R T R E S S" produced by Chris Chu of the Morning Benders. The first single "Gold Skull" was produced by Neon Indian. Mark Olson - Many Colored Kite (Ryko) .................................................. Co-founder of legendary Americana band The Jayhawks and a critically acclaimed artist whose influential catalog spans 25 years. Many Colored Kite is the follow up to his 2007 personal milestone Salvation Blues, which was a New York Times Critics pick. Many Colored Kite greets the listener with its earthy, neo-Folk feel that encompasses classic and 60's British Folk as well as the "desert country" that he has been associated with in the past. Each album has a review and enables you to listen to the entire album before you buy it. Give 'er a spin! Hot Hot Heat - Future Breeds (Dangerbird) .................................................. On Future Breeds, Hot Hot Heat returns to its roots both metaphorically and literally with a hot-wired and proud party album throbbing with spontaneity and creativity. When the band began writing Future Breeds, front man Steve Bays, along with band mates Paul Hawley and Luke Paquin, sought to recapture the energy and sheer love for the art form that drove the late-nineties Vancouver punk scene from which the band emerged. We Are Scientists - Barbara (MRI) .................................................. We Are Scientists return with more bubbly chorus', jittery rhythms and popping bass than you can shake a stick at. The band has a new drummer and nothing has stopped the band's Keith Murray from delivering his usual blend of 80's affectations and pop clatter. Sarah McLachlan - Laws of Illusion (Arista) .................................................. Long awaited 2010 album from the multi-platinum and Grammy-Award winning singer/songwriter, her first studio album of new material in seven years. Laws Of Illusions was recorded in Montreal and Vancouver with Sarah's longtime collaborator/producer Pierre Marchand. Sarah has sold over 40 million recordings worldwide since her recording career began in 1988 with her debut album. Each and every one of her albums has been certified Gold or Platinum. Features the first single 'Loving You Is Easy'. Alejandro Escovedo - Street Songs of Love (Fantasy) .................................................. From his days in the now legendary punk/alt-country outfits The Nuns, Rank and File and his own True Believers, to his glowingly received solo gems including 2008's Real Animal, Escovedo has built a rapturous underground following among fans, songwriting peers and critics alike. His highly anticipated Fantasy Records debut, Street Songs of Love, is a 13-track celebration of survival, liberation and ultimate salvation. Delphic - Acolyte (Dangerbird) .................................................. In a world of indie bands dipping a cautious toe into dance music's occasionally baffling computer world, Delphic are post-dance futurist nostalgics from Manchester who have managed to take repetitive beats and crisp electronics out of the underground to emerge as one of the UK's most exciting new bands. -------------------------------------------------- More information about shows and more on the horizon is available for the technologically inclined at http://www.landlockedmusic.com/ or http://myspace.com/landlockedbton or http://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385198570 or http://twitter.com/landlockedmusic We are looking to buy/trade all your old unwanted CDs & LPs!
